From their website:1985 In the swirling local Atlanta Music scene, that included the Indigo Girls, Uncle Green (later known as 3Lb.Thrill) and Mr. Crowes Garden (later known as The Black Crowes), Kevn Kinney found Tim Nielsen. Tim and drummer Paul Lenz were in a popular mod punk band called The Nightporters. Kevn had just moved down from Milwaukee and was working at a sewage treatment plant by day and playing folk gigs by night. The three began jamming and found a natural chemistry. Tim and Paul left their band to join Kevn. They chose a band name from one of Kevn's many songs that reflected the two directions of their music, "Drivin' N' Cryin'." The early DNC gigs were often like a jamboree. Who knew who would be on stage? Often up there was Frank French (a former member of The 1910 Fruitgum Co.), who produced Kevn's first Atlanta demos that summer. Others included Kevn's brother, Michael, on violin and Fred LeBlanc of Dash Rip Rock (and later Cowboy Mouth). Tim, long the punk rock bassist, began playing mandolin to accompany Kevn's more folksy songs.
