DREAMS COME TRUE contains many of Ella Fitzgerald's finest performances from her first six years on record, before the start of her solo career, when she was singing with the legendary drummer, Chick Webb, and his orchestra. Originally released as ELLA FITZGERALD AND HER FAMOUS ORCHESTRA, this album represents the period just after Webb's untimely demise, when Fitzgerald fronted the band. Ella Fitzgerald's vocal style always showcased her wide range and improvisational skill. Even in her early years, we hear the approach that would later earn her the title, "The First Lady of Song." On her very first recorded effort, "I'll Chase Away the Blues," recorded at the age of 17, she sounds confident and displays a mature sense of swing. In addition, trumpeter Taft Jordan and tenor saxophonist Elmer Williams provide the necessary tonal contrast to her smooth, dark timbre. Ella Fitzgerald's ability to infuse a lyric with sincere emotion, and rhythmic and melodic variety, separates her from those of her contemporaries who merely sang the tune as it was written.
